Matyas Pavlik
Matyas Pavlik was born in 1984 in the Czech Republic. He lived for much of his life in the United States, Mexico and Portugal before returning to his home country. The son of Czech glass artists Michael Pavlik and Vladamira Klumpar. Like his mother, he was artistically inspired by the various cultures. Thus, for example, the time that he spent in Mexico influenced not only his aesthetic style but also his understanding of the importance of colours.
Matyas studied graphic design at the University of San Francisco, and studied humanities at the Anglo American University in Prague. As both of his parents are glass sculptors, so he has been surrounded by glass and art since day one. Exposed to many cultures, landscapes and languages, the diverse colors and approaches have shaped his personality and style. While studying graphic design at the University of San Francisco, he spent a semester at the Academy of Art and Design in Prague. Here he discovered his passion for hands-on work with clay and plaster and became fascinated with the limitless possibilities of kiln casting. In order to master the skill of glass casting - a method developed in Železný Brod in North Bohemia - he moved to the Czech Republic and began working alongside his mother, Vladimíra. In 2012, Matyas joined the design project "M.O.M" (My Object Museum), which introduced him to the Czech heritage of glassmaking and cutting. Captivated by the craftsmanship of this disappearing applied art, he began incorporating traditional cutting techniques into his conceptual glass castings. His impressive sculptures alternate between highlighting geometric and organic shapes. He belongs to a new generation of designers. He currently works in the Czech Republic.
